It's a small thing, we know, but our favorite feature on this gorgeous saw is the handle. That's because everybody has his or her own comfort zone: Some like a vertical grip, some a horizontal. Left-handers usually prefer a handle that tilts 45 degrees to the left. It's all here. The four-position handle features two safety lock buttons—one on each end of the handle, for right- and left-handers-—and one must be pressed to allow the saw to power up. At this saw's heart is a beefy, Bosch-quality 15-amp motor with a no-load max of 3,800 rpm and peak 3 HP. Around it, you'll find one plus after another. We like the super-wide miter range of 52 degrees both left and right, because as you know, sometimes the world isn't perfect. It bevels from 0 to 47 degrees left and 0 to 46 right, with the range selector and lock knobs right up front where they should be. The 10 miter detents can all be overridden easily for micro-fine adjustments. The sliding extensions are handy, and we like the integrated workpiece clamps and especially the flip-up crown stops. Another important feature to us is that the scales are clear and legible, even for those of us who won't admit we need bifocals. One more nice touch is the option of replacing the kerf insert for different blades, creating a zero-clearance insert that will minimize tearout. Compound Feature for Precise Miters and Bevels
Hitachi designed the C12FDH for versatile, easy use. The thumb-actuated positive miter stops for simple miter adjustments at the most common angles between zero and 52 degrees to the left and right. This design allows you to easily change the angle of the cutting blade for creating miters in crown molding and other trim pieces.

The bevel scale ranges from zero to 48 degrees to the left and right, allowing your material to stay in place while you flip the saw head to make opposing cuts, and the saw head bevels to the right or left, also allowing the material to stay securely in place for cutting efficiency. After your major bevel angle is secured, a micro-bevel adjustment knob can be used to dial in a precise angle without the weight of the saw head compromising accuracy.

The 12-inch TCT saw blade (included) makes easy work of delicate trim and other woodwork, and the tall, pivoting aluminum fence stands at a height of 5-1/8 inches to allow for accurate vertical cutting of crown molding and cutting of large workpieces up to 2-5/16 inches high and 5-21/32 inches deep.

We're rarely speechless around here, but after bringing this blade down through a gorgeous piece of maple, it nearly happened. We knew that Forrest makes some of the best blades on the planet, but we truly weren't prepared for the gorgeous cut we got with this blade.

On the back side of plywood, we had zero tearout. When we cut a length of 8/4 oak, it felt like a hot knife through butter, and the result was too good to be believed: smooth as glass, completely free of circle marks of any kind, and it looked like it had been sanded already - cut after cut after cut.

You can pick up a miter saw blade for a tenth of this price, of course. It will cut. But it won't cut like this. And it won't last as long as this blade will, not by a long shot. Because it's made of double-hard C-4 carbide, it holds it edge for what seems like forever, and it resharpens beautifully.

Forrest spends a good deal of time on each blade, ensuring that it's as straight as can be, and that's part of what you're paying for. If you spent good money on a decent miter saw, you owe it to yourself to put this blade on it. What the Bosch 12-inch compound miter saw may lack in popularity compared to some of its competitors, it makes up for in quality design and construction. The saw has a heavy-duty 26-inch steel table that extends to 29 inches, and a tall sliding fence for working with crown molding and other large stock. While this isn't the lightest 12-inch saw available, at only 43 pounds it's still plenty portable, and comes with a cushioned top handle for easy carrying to and from the truck. Considering how solid and stable this tool is, and the amount of metal making up the base and table, we were actually surprised to find that it weighs as little as it does. The 15 amp motor on this saw, in typical Bosch fashion, runs remarkably smooth and relatively quiet. The electric brake stops the blade quickly every time. The miter gauge on this saw is engraved, so if the paint wears off you won't lose the markings or need to replace the saw. This is a great feature, and the Bosch saw is one of only a couple of saws on the market that includes it. It also features nine miter detents that can be easily overridden for micro adjustments, and we had no problem getting the table to lock in tight at a half degree off the detent. The saw has a comfortable horizontal D-handle, with a nice wide trigger and a safety switch inset in the handle right where your thumb can reach it. This saw offers all the accuracy and cutting capacity of other 12 inchers in a design that's easy and comfortable to use. Best of all, it comes with the Bosch reputation for solid engineering and smooth performance. Choosing a Miter Saw
Miter saws are versatile tools that have become a mainstay of workshops everywhere. These powerful saws make angled cuts by pulling a circular blade down onto a workpiece with a short, controlled plunge. It might appear that miter saws are infinitely complex and varied, but there are only three general types. The type you choose will depend on your woodworking needs.

Basic Miter Saws
Basic miter saws are the least versatile off the three major variations, but they’re a great starting point for novice do-it-yourselfers. These models typically adjust for miter cuts only, so consider upgrading if you need to do more than that.

Compound Miter Saw
Compound miter saws are easier to use than basic miter saws because you can place your stock flat for cutting, and they adjust simultaneously for miter and bevel cuts. A compound miter saw is great for jobs that feature stock that's not very tall or wide, such as door and window trim or picture frames.

Sliding Compound Miter Saws
Sliding compound miter saws are the most versatile of the available models. They have a motor and blade assembly that's mounted on a moveable arm to accommodate longer, wider workpieces. For smaller pieces, the saw performs like an ordinary fixed-head model. On some models, the blade can only pivot in one direction, but on a dual sliding compound miter saw, the blade can tilt to the right or left.

Miter Saw Blades
Miter saw blades come in a variety of different sizes, grades, and materials, but there are three main types: steel, high-speed steel, and carbide-tipped blades.

• Steel: Inexpensive and good for cutting soft woods or plywoods. Sharpness diminishes quickly in tougher materials.
• High-Speed Steel: More rugged than steel blades, and great for cutting harder woods.
